Blood test results are in!

When I told my doctor I had been a vegan for over a year the look of concern immediately appeared on her face.

Would my blood test confirm that I too was an anemic protein deficient veg-head that we so often hear about??

Where do you get your protein?

Well after 16 months of just raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and no animal products my blood panel, lipid panel, kidney & liver function, protein, ferratin [iron storage in body], fasting glucose, Vitamin D are all within the normal range!

Everything looks good, my B12 was actually off the charts (was taking B12 sublinguals for a while but haven’t had any in a few weeks). My doc said she rarely sees cholesterol at as healthy a level as mine. Potassium notably is within the normal range in spite of all the bananas I eat (sometimes 40 or more in a day). Protein, well see for yourself. My vitamin D is at the bottom of the normal range so I’ll keep working on my tan. The only thing below normal was sodium just by a notch, no big deal. Not bad overall if I do say so myself. :)

Big pile o' bananas

My Lunch -- No Hyperkalemia for me

So thanks to the results my doc now says she has no concerns about whether I’m getting everything I need from my diet. It would have been nice had I gotten my blood tested about a year ago for the sake of comparison but I’ll do it again in a year to keep an eye on things. Been feeling great lately, so far so good.

Check out the results here (click thumbnails to enlarge). Post any questions in the comment section via the link above.

p1 (liver function/blood count)

p2 ( blood cont'd/kidneys/iron/glucose/cholesterol)

p3 (potassium/protein/sodium/thyroid/B12/D)

p4 (kidney function)

  1. Great job. I recently had blood work done myself, and every one of my levels was perfect. I was on the low (healthy) end of everything. It’s exciting to hear, no doubt. :)

  2. thx! yes was definitely happy to hear and see the change in my doctor’s attitude towards my diet. perhaps before long we’ll have so many lfrv’s acing their blood tests people will get bored of reading about it and accept it as a matter of fact. :D

  3. Do you take B12 supplements?

    • Hi Baran i’ve been taking methylcobalamin sublinguals on and off for the past year. Like I said I haven’t taken any in a few weeks. I wasn’t expecting my B12 to be so high actually. the next time I get my blood work done I probably won’t supplement to see what my levels would be like. fresh, locally grown produce (not what you get at the grocery store) in healthy soil I think is the best natural source of B12 and I think may be sufficient for some if not many. we’ll see in my case.

  4. Impressive!
